Misadventurous Melissa

Everyday is an adventure, or misadventure as the case may be. It is the latter that makes for the best stories, inspiring the name of my blog. I'm a nurse and an attorney (and way too silly sometimes). I am retired now. WELCOME to my blog! This is a work of fiction inspired by true events. The patients I refer to are a patchwork quilt of various patient's problems mixed together. If you think you recognize someone, you are wrong. These people do not really exist.

Why Does Sex Matter?

A patient needed cleaning after using a bedpan. The patient's visitor said to the nurse, "You can't clean her because your a boy." The nurse replied, "I'm a man, not a boy" and then proceeded to clean her.

I find it insulting that people think a nurse can't take care of certain patients because of their gender. It's rare that a patient objects to an opposite sex doctor, but patients routinely request same sex nurses. Do they think that we're all sexual perverts who are aroused by the site of an old, fat butt being wiped if it happens to belong to the opposite gender? We don't care what sex they are. Why do they care what sex we are?

OK I know I am nurse and I am supposed to know better, but I would be embarassed to have a male nurse tend to my personal needs/hygiene, and you know I'm not shy or inhibited at all.

I am shy and inhibited, but I wouldn't mind having a male nurse. How do you feel about male doctors?

I made the mistake of telling the dogs yesterday that we're going to see their granddogs today. They couldn't wait to get me up because they're so excited.

Why does gender matter for nurses, but not doctors? Aren't we professionals too?

How exciting! A housefull of happy bouncy wet dogs! I watered this am and Daisy & Dar walk around in the sprinklers like they aren't even on, and Heidi rolls around on her back on the wet grass yipping and tossing her ball in the air! The entertainment is always free here! They would be very happy to see the boys next weekend if you're not busy, we could hook up your TIVO.
And yes we are professionals, sometimes even more than the doc's in terms of behaviour (but all those years in school leave little time to develop social skills).
I have nothing against male nurses, the guys I've worked with for the most part have been very kind, caring and competent, great in a code, and I would be happy to be assigned to one, but I don't want them near my rear! OK so I guess in some ways I am a little prudish, or self conscious. Maybe if I looked like Cindy Crawford I would'nt mind!

Next weekend I'm working. My schedule is all messed up. Half the time I don't know what day of the week it is, but somehow I always manage to show up for work on the right day.
