Misadventurous Melissa

Everyday is an adventure, or misadventure as the case may be. It is the latter that makes for the best stories, inspiring the name of my blog. I'm a nurse and an attorney (and way too silly sometimes). I am retired now. WELCOME to my blog! This is a work of fiction inspired by true events. The patients I refer to are a patchwork quilt of various patient's problems mixed together. If you think you recognize someone, you are wrong. These people do not really exist.

A Day Too Late

Notice my attractive mask? Why am I wearing it? It doesn't matter. What matters is that I wasn't wearing it yesterday.

Today, we found out that a patient's respiratory infection was caused by a bacterial infection for which there is no real cure. Today we're wearing masks, a day too late. But then, why should this week be any different from any other.

I'm sure that I will. This kind of thing happens all of the time. My immune system seems to be strong.

We constantly get patients admitted with things like MRSA, but only find out about it an hour or even a day later.

I think if you're healthy then it's a bit difficult to pick up such infections.

Beajerry, I love your blog. I've read all of your current posts and I'm working on the archives. I'm so glad that you visited.

I have no idea if this true, but I've heard speculation that most nurses are infected with MRSA. Because we're healthy, our bodies can keep it in check. I've also heard, as part of this rumor, that no one wants to test us for it because then hospitals would lose most of their staff. Have you ever heard anything about this?

I haven't heard about that.
I suspect that MRSA could be found in many-a-nostril, in-hospital and out.
Whether or not the organism has colonized is the thing. You are right that most staff have MRSA, but it hasn't colonized in them because they are healthy.

Yes, we are all carrying MRSA. Our skilled nursing facilities, our hospitals and especially our prisons are all breeding grounds. The incidence of community aquired MRSA is up. Maybe we could discourage the use of antibiotics in the community for viral infections and allergic symptoms so we don't produce so many drug resistant strains of bacteria. I can't tell you how many calls I get from patients every week who demand antibiotics for a clear runny nose, or "I think I'm getting a cold and I don't have time to be sick". The one's I really like are the callers who demand 2nd generation cephalosporins, because they get really sick so they need a "stronger" drug!

That must drive you crazy when people demand medication that will do no good, but will ultimately do much harm. I hope that the doctor you work for says no.
