Misadventurous Melissa

Everyday is an adventure, or misadventure as the case may be. It is the latter that makes for the best stories, inspiring the name of my blog. Chicken With Emesis Sauce


Something new has shown up on the patient menu. They call it chicken with gravy. The picture doesn't quite capture the unusual color of the gravy. It is actually the same bright shade of yellow as vomit. Since most of our post operative patients do vomit after eating dinner, it is a challenge to determine if what is on their trays is uneaten food or vomit. It's kind of embarrassing to have to ask. How would you feel if you were a patient and your nurse asked you if you threw up and your answer was no, you hadn't eaten yet?

The first couple of days a vegetarian is in the hospital, they get fed meat until dietary finally catches on. After that, if a vegetarian can eat dairy products, they get macaroni and cheese or cottage cheese and fruit. The vegans all have their food brought in from the outside. The last vegan we had ate mostly Pop Tarts and sodas. Not coincidentally, she also had a severe vitamin B12 deficiency and was partially paralyzed as a result. I don't know if she ever regained the use of her legs.

My best advice is to not get sick. :)

My dogs could do a better job of running the dietary department. Although the patients might get tired of meat, cheese and kibble.

I think the problem is a little higher up in the chain of command. If management wanted decent food to be a priority they would make it happen. Years ago when I was cooking, I worked part time at a big multi level care facility near the beach up north. They had a french classically trained chef running the kitchen and the food was actually edible.
