Misadventurous Melissa

Everyday is an adventure, or misadventure as the case may be. It is the latter that makes for the best stories, inspiring the name of my blog. I'm a nurse and an attorney (and way too silly sometimes). I am retired now. WELCOME to my blog! This is a work of fiction inspired by true events. The patients I refer to are a patchwork quilt of various patient's problems mixed together. If you think you recognize someone, you are wrong. These people do not really exist.

The Scary Nurse

The patient was scheduled for surgery and the consent was for the "left foot." I don't think that I'm being too picky when I think that the consent should say what the surgeon is planning to do to the left foot. Is he going to nail some bones together, clean out a wound or amputate it? The scary nurse didn't see what the problem was. Even after it was explained to her, she kept saying, "But he's doing the left foot!"

This same nurse in report said that another patient had cirrhosis of the left foot. (What is it with left feet?) Everyone laughed figuring that she had just mispoken, but she got upset and insisted that the patient had cirrhosis of the foot. What the patient actually had was psoriasis on his foot. Did she think that his left foot had a drinking problem?

Apparently not only is the nursing shortage getting worse, but the competent nursing shortage is worse than before.

What's really scary is that she is our most experienced nurse. I'm starting to wonder if she takes drugs or is developing mild dementia. I have a lot of scary stories invoving her. Someday I'll get to them.
